WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE YARD?

Why did the chicken cross the yard?

To lay an egg!

We got our first egg today and we are so excited! Here's the story:
Lily and I went outside to feed the chickens some bread. I found them on the east side of the house under the butterfly bush. They all came out when they heard us coming and pecked at the bread. Everyone except Henrietta. Uh-oh, I thought she might be hurt, so we went to search for her. We looked in the chicken house and she was laying in one corner and she didn't get up. Well, she is either sick or about to lay an egg. We left her alone and came back in about an hour and she was standing above an egg! I couldn't believe it- we thought it would be a few more weeks before they started laying. I took a few pictures and then she started clucking REALLY LOUD! It scared me so I ran away. I guess she was calling her hen friends because she got up, walked down the chicken ramp and ran toward the other chickens. Now if we can just get her to lay her eggs in the nesting box.....

I know ya'll are excited about your first egg. Heather, I would be a little freaked out too by all the clucking. Are you going to eat your egg? :-)

I wouldn't be afraid of the chicken. Think about it if you layed an egg wouldn't you cluck? She was only bragging. Looks like a very healthy egg to me!! I told Chris last week he needed to get a fake egg and they would probably start laying. Isn't it amazing that his "favorite" layed the first. Love you all and am really proud of the Grand chickens (Ha,Ha)

Heather you need to ask mimi about the time we got chickens (for Easter) and how they pecked her toe! and I think one was a rooster because he always wanted to "spur" you. That is exciting about the egg, tho.
